I'm curious about social workers.

I've known social worker as the person who comes in and take the abused child away to another foster family. I'm sure this is a stereotype.

What else do social workers do?

Time to wikipedia that, Sian! lol I'm kidding. I think social workers play a whole range of roles. I don't think they're necessary all tragedies too. Some situations might just be difficult, awkward, or that people are simply looking for an expert opinion or solution to life's many, many problems. I know social workers who are working on the front line, hold mediation between parties, private counselling, and so much more. So it's definitely not taking kids away from the abusive father all the time.
